It’s about taking Baby Steps…

So if you haven’t already bought your Murfest tickets today, what are you waiting for?
We apologise for the blatant advertising above. But as Murfest’s festival director Shobie Malani shares in her interview with Astro- a leading media channel in Malaysia- it all comes down to baby steps. What does that even mean for us as adults?

Let’s take for example that you just want to get healthier. What do you do? Of course we’ve got ancient wisdom, not to mention our mothers who tell us that we should eat three square meals a day. And I don’t know about you but my mom never let my brother and I snack between meals. We had a whole refridgerator stuffed with chocolates, and ice-cream, but somehow because of the very tasty and fairly nutritious food my mother made on a daily basis we never quite felt that urge to snack on junk food. And what the food lacked in nutrition it more than made up for in love.

That could be your step no. 1. Eliminate the food that you somehow know in your gut and your heart isn’t good for you.

If this sounds too subjective for you, check for labels. The more the number of chemical sounding names at the back, the less healthy it is for you. Think simple. And also, please do your research. Using the same example what could be your step no. 2?

Now that you’ve looked at possible items you could eliminate from your daily food choices, the next step could be adding in exercise. Before you start groaning, think of exercise as fun, and find a physical activity that you would enjoy doing.

If you’re a woman, and you live in a wonderful bustling city like KL, window-shopping at the mall might actually excite you. I suggest leaving your credit cards at home though! Or if you have young children, take them out to the park, or go bike-riding with them. Exercise does not have to mean going to a gym for 2 hours and sweating it out on the treadmill or the elliptical. And then breaking your back bench-pressing. For those of you for whom the gym is a second home, kudos.

But the point we’re making is, there are multiple options to exercising, just as soon as you make up your mind. What does Murfest have in store for you when it comes to nutrition and exercise? If you’ve managed to glance through the Murfest schedule, you’ll see that you have numerous options for both eating healthily, and exercising. If you’ve always wanted to learn more about going vegan, on Day 1 itself there’s a workshop by Pamela Nowicka who’ll share with you some of the benefits of being a vegetarian.

When it comes to exercise you’re truly spoiled for choice. There’s something for anyone- literally- from beginner to advanced, from pilates to yoga, to dance. There’s ‘Yoga Unlocked- An Essential Guide’ ; something a beginner to yoga can start with to get an understanding of what yoga is, and why people choose to willingly bend over backwards. What you discover may just surprise you. There’s a Capoeira workshop on Day 2 taught by renowned instructors Prof. Pimbal and Lilica Vargas. If you have no idea what this is, then this is your chance to find out. It’s not a cliché to say that Murfest really has something for everyone, no matter who you are. If you have even a tiny particle of doubt in your mind if this is the right place for you, there’s just one thing you can do. Come find out for yourself.
